Customer Survey & Business Model Canvas

Why did we choose this prototype?

In the end we chose the 3M City Guide as our lead projects based on its feasibility, practicality and innovation aspect. The app will combine several functionalities, namely 3M Innovation, Google Maps Integration, Innovation Points, Attractions. By providing touristic services as well as information regarding the innovations offered by 3M we would engage the users and bring them closer to innovation. T

Explanation of the prototype: The app will include four main functions: a 3M innovation button, which will be subdivided in sample industries which show some examples of 3M's innovation projects. Then the app will also include an integrated Google Maps function. The third app functionality are interest points. These are subdivided into two aspects: the first, Attractions, will have a list of attractions and will be linked to Wikipedia, so that the users can get information regarding the interest point. The second aspect are the innovation points, of which there are 5, which are tangible pillars with a router inside and which portray on the phone a 3D model of the attraction.Lastly, the app contains a reward and discount system, which is based on points gained through visiting the innovation points as well as discounts offered by local shops.

Innovation School Fair
The 3D prototype displays a school setting in which children and parents are gathered around tables. On the tables these visitors would find innovative products by 3M with the aim of engaging the public and connecting innovation with the general public. By displaying 3M's projects to the general public, especially the young people, we aim to encourage innovation thinking in the younger generations.

Innovation Conference:
The 3D prototype displays a conference setting which depicts the general public, 3M employees as well as scientists in a friendly and engaging environment. The people around the tables discuss the new prototypes and projects 3M has been working on. In the model we see the 3M car model as well as a model for Smart Cities. By including both the general public as well as scientists the two target groups can exchange to think about common problems and encourage innovation.

App Integration/Gamification of Tourist Locations:
The 3M City guide combines both a city map as well as an interactive game in which tourists and locals can accumulate points by visiting tourist attractions and experience 3M's innovation projects at the site. They will also be able to watch videos and presentations on 3M and innovation due to free wifi access provided by the company in sponsorship with the telecom providers. By including gamification strategies the user would become more engaged in the project and 3M would encourage an active discourse on innovation.

Elevator Pitch:

#1: For children and parents who want to learn and have fun, school fairs and excursions to the Innovation Lab is an event in which both groups would not only engage with 3M employees and projects but also with innovation and generate curiosity in innovation. In contrast to tradtional lectures, it would encourage children to actively experience innovation and play with it in an educational.
#2: For the general public who want to learn about innovation and 3M's involvement, a fair or promotional event is an event in which the general public would engage with 3M projects and scientist to learn about innovation and to even identify current problems that could be easily solved. In contrast to the simple Innovation Center which visitors can explore, these fairs would encourage a multilateral conversation between the general public and the people closer to innovation to not only evoke the interest of the public but also think of possible solutions to current problems.
#3: For the general public who use their mobile phones and play with it, an app using tourist location and gamification strategies is a method which would involve the public in an engaging way to learn about innovation whilst winning points to compare against other people. In contrast to simple city guides, the app would not only encourage tourists and locals to visit attractions but also to experience 3M projects, set up around the tourist locations, which would encourage the users to think about and experience innovation.

Research & Stakeholder

Research Report:

What was your design challenge?
The challenge of the research design was to identify the appropriate questions to the specific target groups in order to understand the different meanings of innovation, how innovation is perceived within Madrid, and what would be the best way to attract people to use it.

What methods did you do to investigate the challenge?
We used contextual interviews in the form of interviews with 3M employees at the 3M innovation center as well as personal interviews with people on the street. By asking them previously selected questions targeting the different groups we were able to extract information with different views. Our personal interviews were conducted around Salamanca. We also used self-exploration by analyzing the 3M Innovation Center as well as our own experiences with innovation to embrace a consumer's and company's point of view.

Mind Map

Add up to 3 pieces of primary data & explain their significance to your current state in the process?

Quote Man on the Street: "Innovation is something new. Something that creates value." Innovation is perceived as a change that impacts society directly. This would for example mean that innovation is mostly perceived in the form of new products rather than immaterial services. Innovation should also be visible to the general public and not a specific group.

Quote 3M Employee: "A good way of promoting innovation is by conducting roadshows and to generate experiences to show the public how 3M is providing innovation to our lives." 3M employees agree with our initial idea to bring innovation closer to the public by organizing events and displaying new products in order to showcase innovation and inspire the public to embrace innovation.
